Abstract

The effects of FIRST LANGUAGE on second/foreign language learning has always been a matter of controversy among ELT specialists. Different researches have been conducted to confirm or reject the existence of such effects and yet many others to investigate its different aspects. The WRITING skill, however, has attracted very few researchers since any kind of study on this skill requires a team rather than a single researcher to just score the papers, let alone the other phases of the research. This study is concerned with the texts resulting from two different composing process, one WRITING first in Farsi and then translating into English, and the other, WRITING directly in English. The above tasks were assigned to thirty Iranian sophomores majoring in English TRANSLATION. The findings of the research suggest that the use of the FIRST LANGUAGE does not result in significant difference in the subjects WRITING performance in English.
