Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors that have an impact on women"s social identity. This research was conducted through the survey method and the data have been collected through questionnaires 410 women between the ages 18 to 64 in Shiraz city (Iran). In order to clarify women"s social identity, the theory of Anthony Gidens has been applied. According to this theory, indexes such as self-confidence, the extent of communication network self=satisfaction in society, and rationality are major factors in the formation .of social identity. It is necessary to mention that social identity can be categorized in to five parts: religious identity, ethnic identity, national identity, group identity and sexual identity. The results of a multivariate analysis showed that level of education, rate of self-satisfaction in the society, rationality, and, family income are the variables that have the greatest influence on the dependent variable (religious identity) and explain nearly 26 percent of its variation. The extent of communication network, level of education, rate of self-satisfaction and self-confidence are the variables that have the ;greatest effect on ethnic identity, and explain nearly 36 percent of its variation. The extent of communication network, level of education and fathers level of education are variables which have the greatest influence on sexual identity and explain nearly 30 percent of its variation. The extent of communication network, level of education, and fathers level of education have the highest effects on group identity and explain nearly 40 pet-cent of its variation. Finally, mothers level of education and fathers level of education have high correlation with national identity and explain nearly 40 percent of its variations. Therefore, the independent variables can explain the variation of the dependent variables to a great extent. We can conclude that the model of Antony Giadens is an appropriate model to measure social identity.
