Abstract

This article has tried to introduce the concept of CLASS from the point of view of the well known French sociologist PIERRE BOURDIEU. A concept that Bourdieu has drawn from Weber, Marx and STRUCTURALISM. He has made many empirical surveys on this subject d his books are full of empirical data along with well grounded theory. He has tried to show the relationship of CLASS to SOCIAL STATUS, taste and way of life. Most impotently he has introduced the concept of "habitus" to make a good theoretical framework in order to explain the concept of CLASS which is much more multidimensional from this point of view compared to the CLASSical sociologists. Another important concept for understanding CLASS is capital which Bouidieu believes can be divided into economic capital, social capital, cultural capital and symbolic capital. Bourdieu is an excellent sociologist and a remarkable writer. He has created a theoretical framework which is quite encompassing and can be used not only on a micro sociological scale, but on a macro sociological level and can be used for societies other than France and indeed any stratified society.
