Abstract

  Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common childhood psychiatric disorders. These disorders are characterized by inattentiveness, impassivity, and over-activity and cause some problems for the children and their parents.The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of Problem Solving Training on the reduction of ADHD symptoms in the primary school children. Methods using cluster sampling, five boy primary schools were randomly chosen from 30 boy primary schools of Elam (a city in the west of Iran). Then based on the parent and teacher version of the Child Symptom Inventory-Four (CSI-4) and diagnostic criteria of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in the forth edition of the Statistical and Diagnostic Manual of Mental Disorders, 28 boys who had ADHD were randomly assigned in the experimental and control groups. The experimental group received 10 sessions of 40 minutes Problem Solving Training adopted Division and Gold Fried and Huton et al. The control group did not receive any treatment. Parents and teachers completed the CSI-4 one week (post-test) and three weeks (follow-up) after the treatment. Results of Multi Variate Analyses of Variance showed that according to the teacher and parent assessments one week after the training, the differences between the 2 groups were significant on the severity score of the total symptoms of attention deficit and hyperactivity as well as on the severity scores of the symptoms of attention deficit and hyperactivity separately (P<0.05). It was also found those three weeks after the training, the differences between the 2 groups were significant on the severity score of hyperactivity symptoms according to the teacher and parent assessments and on the severity score of total symptoms of attention deficit and hyperactivity as well as on the symptoms of attention reported by (P<0.05). It was concluded that the Problem Solving Training as one of the cognitive behavioral interventions is a useful method in the treatment of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in Children.
