Abstract

In different scientific and literary texts of the Persian language, the HOOPOE has various reflections. As well as dictionaries, ancient medical texts, stories and superstitions, one can observe the outstanding role of this bird in the Persian literature. Among the birds that writers and poets have used in their writings and poems, the HOOPOE has a special status because of its presence in the tale of the prophet Solomon in the holly Quran. Generally, the role of this bird could be studied from two views. One aspect originates from the presence of HOOPOE in the story of the Solomon and Belgheis. Here, it has a religious mythical role. The second aspect is related to the external features of this bird such as its crest, colored feathers, filthy body, the bad smell of its nest and so on. The present study has also investigated the issue in contemporary Persian literature in which the bird has a very limited role.
