Abstract

In all languages PROSODIC FEATURES, being essential part of linguistic behavior, have some functions in conveying SEMANTIC INFORMATION to listeners. But in the informal conversation changing the normal value of PROSODIC FEATURES communicates nonverbal, EVIDENTIAL INFORMATION and has been considered as paralinguistic behavior. The importance of such a manipulation in acoustic features is such that the listeners can perceive different meanings bearing linguistically identical utterances. This kind of information distribution and communication is of economic value in language.In this paper, it is assumed that emotions and attitudes are encoded in speech wave form, and that listeners are able to recognize and decode the information encapsulated. The aim is to show the relationship between different kinds of nonverbal information and the ACOUSTIC CUES meaningful for Persian speakers. The results have indicated that speakers' pragmatic concerns have been reflected in the vowel duration, intensity and the pitch contour of utterances.
