Abstract

The main purpose of this research was to study the relationship between ATTACHMENT styles (secure, avoidant, ambivalent) and PERSONALITY dimensions (neuroticism, extraversion, openness, agreeableness, consciousness). Two hundred and thirty three students (102 male, 131 female) from the University of Tehran participated in this study. Adult ATTACHMENT Inventory (AAI) was applied for measuring ATTACHMENT styles. Neo-Five Factor Inventory (NEOFH) was used to measure PERSONALITY dimensions. Analysis of the data involved both descriptive and inferential statistics including means, standard deviations, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and regression analysis. The results revealed that: secure ATTACHMENT style was positively associated with extraversion and agreeableness; insecure ATTACHMENT styles (avoidant, ambivalent) were positively correlated with neuroticism, they were also negatively related to extraversion; ambivalent ATTACHMENT style was negatively associated with consciousness; avoidant ATTACHMENT style was negatively correlated with agreeableness. PERSONALITY traits are supposed to be influenced by secure and insecure internal working models of self and others.
