Title

THE HUMAN FIGURES IN SYSTEM OF SIGNS IN THE SASSANID ERA-IRAN

Pages

  157-182

Abstract

What has been written about the art of the Sassanid era by the Iranian and foreign researchers in books and articles are mainly focused on historical introduction and description of the remains of the artworks of that time. In most of these works, the exact description of the human figures in rock reliefs, metal plates and coins, and references to the signs and symbols of social aesthetics are concerned. These new descriptive and researches which are done on political philosophy and social thought of the ancient time, has provided a proper context to analyze the aesthetic sociological aspect of Sassanid art, especially human figures.Human figures depicted in the Sassanid art, prior to satisfaction of the powerful people’s personal desires, have operated social and political functions. They were settled to be seen, and fulfill their continuative and protecting role to protect the current life. The Sassanid Artists did not make realistic human figures. They did not even seek to portray the glorious aspect of the particular historical moments in a specified space and time. So they appear static and unchangeable; each element is a symbol of a cultural characteristic and it’s referred to a specified function, stability, political legitimacy and destiny. In order to establish a sign system suitable to present humane figures which mainly manifests the royal institutional system, implicit and mythical implications of Iranian ancient culture are served as well as closed cultures. Systematic and accurate device Sassanid sign system indicates a conscious aspect of the founders of the Sassanid government initially planned to have their sovereignty.
