Abstract

Due attention to the evolution process in the human inclination to settlement in the CENTRAL ZAGROS area has been among the main arguments of anthropologists and archaeologists. The archaeological excavations carried out so far in the Neolithic sites of the CENTRAL ZAGROS area have revealed a stratified sequence with a long history starting from the middle eighth millenium to the middle sixth millennium B.C in a number of the mentioned sites. The existence of a sequence of structures with specific plans relating to the mode of subsistence are indicative of the early stages of tendency to sedentary in that region, and the use of different materials and how to apply them (to build HOUSEs). The present research includes two main topics 1) investigating the process and pattern of settlement in the NEOLITHIC PERIOD and the stages of seasonal and semi-permanent settlement to permanent settlement in that area, and 2) exploring the possible relations of the structures and the existing elements with the mode of subsistence. According to the findings of recent ethnoarchaeological field studies in the mentioned area, the settlement behaviours of Bakhtiari nomadic pastoralists have been investigated and three SETTLEMENT PATTERNs, from NOMADISM to SEDENTARISM (agricultural village-based economy) have been identified, which will be discussed here. It seems that such displacements or movements may explain the primary attempts of human being to build and use HOUSEs in the early, middle and late NEOLITHIC PERIODs.
