AN ECONOMIC ANTHROPOLOGICAL APPROACH ON CROSS-BORDER SMALL MARKETS, A CASE STUDY OF SARDASHT REGION

Pages

  38-65

Abstract

The regions at BORDERs have had many difficulties such as high rates of unemployment, poverty, lack of investment opportunities, political issues, poor infrastructures, and lack of water supply systems and fertile farmlands. These difficulties cause serious problems like mass migration, trafficking, insecurity, and rising separatist activities. To cope with these problems, The Iranian government has established cross-BORDER markets since 1988. Five years later, these markets changed to formal cross-BORDER small markets currently, there are fifty two cross-BORDER small markets in Iran. This study attempts to evaluate performance of cross-BORDER small markets in Sardasht, an Iranian BORDER region, focusing on welfare indictors (such as employment, income, nutrition, health, leisure time, housing, and social and economic security). It also measures the impact of these markets on informal economic sector, social capital, and rural migration issue in the regions. This research is conducted based on field study of cross-BORDER small markets which located in Sardasht. Data were collected by ethnography and observation participation methods. Findings show that:_Cross-BORDER small markets have created new jobs in both direct and indirect forms. However, they have created more indirect form of jobs rather than direct ones. Besides, they have had positive effect on job mobility._Cross-BORDER small markets inception has led to increase household income._Although cross-BORDER small markets inception has not reversed current growing rural migration trend, but it has controlled informal economic sector._Cross-BORDER small markets have supplied goods in response to the demands of the other regions and provinces rather than the needs of the regions residents._Some welfare indicators related to nutrition, health, housing and the environment has been rather improved due to cross-BORDER small markets inception. However, leisure time has been decreased._Although cross-BORDER small markets invention has led slightly to increase economic security, it has not influenced social security.Findings reveal that cross BORDER small markets have influenced on economic conditions among households though they have not met their original goals. The study concludes that because of limited diffusion capacity, cross-BORDER small markets can't assist scattered villages in short period of time.
