Abstract

The CARAVANSERAIs are the constructions, designed for temporary staying on and resting of TRAVELERs during the long ways of travels across the country. These CARAVANSERAIs are missed their functions under the influences of the recent changes in COMMUNICATIONs and transportations and diminished to the rather ruined places. Establishment and development of CARAVANSERAIs, considering their functional and structural characteristics, caused expansion of COMMUNICATIONs, facilitation of trades and travels, establishment of security and orderliness, and finally increase the rate of economic and also cultural exchanges. The history of these constructions in Iran goes to long times ago and we can consider this country as the origin of CARAVANSERAIs, based on some historian's estimations. Plans and designs of CARAVANSERAI did not changed so much during centuries, and their basic pieces include rooms and the other parts, are set around an enclosed yard and have merely one entrance. Considering the fact that the CARAVANSERAIs were the results of thoughtful and intellectual activities of ancient IRANIANs, we can consider them as a part of our cultural heritages. Therefore, it could be very valuable to study them more precisely and more deeply and to enhance and enrich our knowledge about our cultural roots and origins. The SAFAVI'S EPOCH has many unique characteristics and among them the construction of different roads for transportation and CARAVANSERAIs in them are some of the major characteristics.
