Abstract

Over years, researchers in the field of marriage and family therapy have assessed functionality of therapeutic models. Development of mental health practices at the onset of 21st century highlighted the importance of studying effectiveness of various therapeutic models. In fact, the important question is "what kind of therapy is better?" Meta-analysis integrates results of various studies in order to compare the effect size of various therapeutic models. Aim of the present study is to review the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral models in treatment of marital problems using meta-analytic method. The results indicate that improvement in 17 percent of couples whom were treated through cognitive-behavioral therapeutic models. The extent of improvement was minor. In other words, probability of improvement among couples under cognitive-behavioral treatment models, suffering from marital dissatisfaction, conflict, lack of intimacy, maladjustment and depression, were 17 percent more than couples with no treatment group. Results suggest that effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral models in treatment of the marital problems is higher than no treatment group, but such a level of effectiveness is not high enough to call it a successful therapeutic model.
