Abstract

Objectives: The object of the study was to determine the effectiveness of group encounter and response prevention treatment on the reduction of obsessive-compulsive symptoms in out-patients referred to psychological service centers of Isfahan.Method: 12 patients were randomly selected and assigned to two groups: The experimental group received group encounter and response prevention treatment, and the control group were in the waiting list. All the patients were interviewed, scored average or less on the Beck Depression Inventory, and did not have any personality disorders. The Maudsley Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory (MOCI) was administered as the pre, post and follow-up tests. Findings: The results of multivariate analysis of variance showed that the experimental group significantly scored less than the control group did on the post-test and on the one-month follow-up (P<0.000).Conclusions: This study suggests that encounter and response prevention group therapy reduces obsessive-compulsive symptoms. In addition, patients presented good compliance.
