Abstract

The effect of morphine on learning and memory is a controversial issue. High density of opioid receptors in receptors in fundamental centers related to learning and memory such as hippocampus indicates the excitence of a relationship between opioid receptors and memory process. In this research, effects of opioids on consolidation and retention of memory are evaluated. Different doses of morphine and naloxone are injected in CA! region of dorsal hippocampus. The level of effects of drugs on consolidation of memory is studied by passive avoidance task and time in dark compartment (TDC) and step-through latency (STL) are measured. These results show that morphine decreases and naloxone increases memory process and retention by dose - dependent manner. Endogenous opioid peptides .probably modulate consolidation by interactions with cholinergic and noradrenergic system.
