Abstract

High unemployment along with unbalanced labor market is the most important macroeconomic problem of some developed as well as developing countries including Iran. In other words, labor force which should enhance the capacity of production and lead to growth has become the main threat for a lot of developing countries.Yazd is one of the provinces which have experienced the greatest increase in unemployment rate in recent years. In a way that the unemployment rate of 5.3 in Aban 1375 has reached 16.7 in 1382.In this paper Input-Output Table is used to assess labor requirements of different economic sectors of Yazd as compared with labor force supplied. To do this, first by using the GRIT TECHNIQUE, the regional tables were provided. Then indices of labor producing potential and Input-output elasticity were used to come up with priority of different sectors in providing EMPLOYMENT. Having used the above indices, Multi Ranking Index (MRI) was used to find the key economic sectors of Yazd from the stand point of EMPLOYMENT and compared with indices emphasizing production.The findings of the study show that in the category of agriculture, sectors of agronomy and horticulture; in the category of industry, sectors of textile & clothing, basic metals, and other industrial sectors; and services such as transportation and construction are the key sectors of the economy of Yazd. That means the above sectors while providing high production, contribute significantly to EMPLOYMENT. This research also shows the poor functioning of mining sector in spite of abundance of rich mineral resources in the province. Other finding is that sectors of business, communication, and general services are key factors form stand point of EMPLOYMENT though considered weak from the stand point of production; that is, in these sectors, disregarding the increase in production rate: we can provide job opportunities significantly.
