Normalization of Israeli ties with the Persian Gulf Countries

Abstract

Israel surprising deal with some of the Persian Gulf countries is a significant, influential political achievement for both Jerusalem and Washington. The compromise process is going through despite Palestinian protests. This agreement shapes a moderate position against radical Shiite and Sunni forces in the Middle East. As regards Palestinians, the deal has removed the unilateral annexation from agenda while creating a more conducive situation for future negotiations and dispute resolution. Peace agreement with UAE is not the strategic turning point. Rather, it is the expansion of UAE-Israel that had been going on for decades at lower levels. This will definitely benefit both parties and would facilitate Peace process with other regional countries such as Bahrain, Sudan, Saudi Arabia and Morocco. However, with the addition of UAE to the circle of proponents, there is hope for alleviation of “ the Cold Peace” as the by-product of two previous Peace accords (with Egypt and Jordan) which had escalated tension among Palestinians. The Peaceful process undertaken with UAE has angered Palestinian social activists and leaders. Furthermore, it has infuriated fanatic Sunnis in Turkey as also extreme Shiites in Iran, Hezbollah and Yemeni Houthis who are more opposing Israel rather than supporting Palestine. It should be noted that the normalization deal was struck nor for Palestine issue but for cancelling the annexation mentality. However, execution of the agreement will prompt massive pressure in the future. For this, UAE has pointed out that it would not open any diplomatic mission in Jerusalem so far as the conflict is going on. Will Saudi Arabia join the normalization wave? This is a possibility but it will not happen that fast. Another challenge for Saudi Arabia is the fear of losing its dominance over the world of Islam. This is so important an issue that may prompt Saudis to reject the deal as Palestine is a shared issue for all Muslim countries. Saudi Arabia’ s subscription to normalization may cost it the competition for dominance and place Iran and Turkey in positions to deal blows to Saudis. Israel’ s presence in the Persian Gulf, close to countries that may not have diplomatic ties with Israel could open new economic doors with prospects of friendship and co-existence. Shorter commercial, tourist flights is another advantage of this deal. A stronger economic arm will definitely introduce precious results for Israel’ s allies, even Palestinians. Iran as a big security threat to Arabian countries has prevented the Israel’ s allies from investing in the region and instead focusing their spending on defending against Iran, Yemen, Syria, Al-Qaeda and ISIS. It should be noted that making normalization public will go down as treason against Palestine and thus Arabs should tread carefully. Countries like Iraq, Lebanon, Syria and Yemen are so much Influenced by Iran that it normalization seems unconceivable. What unites these countries is reluctance to pay the political and public relations costs of reaching Peace with Israel.
