Abstract

SOIL EROSION is a natural process that it is intensified by human activities. Erosion results in the reduction of soil fertility and loss of organic substances such as nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium. Reduced forest coverage and reduction of agricultural products, as well as decrease in electricity generation and drop in freshwater quality, along with increase in the incidence of floods, etc, are among some of the direct and INDIRECT SIDE EFFECTS of SOIL EROSION. In this paper, a review of such effects is made with reference to foreign studies, and the economic cost of SOIL EROSION in Iran is calculated. Based on these calculations, the total cost of SOIL EROSION in Iran in 2000is estimated to be 31 percent of the added value of agricultural, hunting and forestry sector in current prices.
