Abstract

In this research usage of expanded and modified perlite with EMULSIFIER and their potential usefulness in combating OIL SPILL was studied. The experimental data showed that when this perlite is added to water-oil mixture, the light particles (40-200kg/m3) moved on the surface and spread over it very quickly. The EXPANDED PERLITE had high surface area (3000cm2/gr) and high porosity (>90%). However EXPANDED PERLITE was able to absorb OIL SPILL and form clogs. It seems that if the EMULSIFIER without EXPANDED PERLITE was added to water-oil mixture, EMULSIFIER as a pollutant entered to sea medium. The modified EXPANDED PERLITE with EMULSIFIER can emulsify OIL SPILL which is 35 times heavier than its own weight, so adsorbed oil with modified EXPANDED PERLITE can be used in Mechanical instruments as booms and pumps and collects OIL SPILLs from the surface of sea water.
