Title

SPECIAL ATTENTION TO MEDICAL WASTE MANAGEMENT IN PRIVATE HOSPITALS OF RASHT

Pages

  96-104

Abstract

Hospital waste contains large amounts of materials which can be harmful to human health, plants, animals, and the environment. This study was carried out to determine the quantity of waste generated in private hospitals of Rasht ( a city in the north of Iran) in order to find out the advantages and disadvantages of hospital management policies and to offer recommendations for their improvement. To this end, 4 hospitals were selected randomly from a total of 6 private hospitals, and the data required were then gathered in two ways. First, a questionnaire was designed to obtain the information needed for statistical analysis. Second, a field study was carried out in the hospitals selected to measure the amount of the waste generated in 6 days of winter and 6 days of summer. The results indicated that the total amount of waste (total mean value) generated by these hospitals was 1197.19 kg per day and consisted of infectious waste (34.68%), domestic waste (63.18%), sharp waste (1.12%), and pathologic waste (1.02%), that is, 3.142 kg per bed and 4.482 kg per patient. Considering the variety and the large quantity of the waste, especially the infectious waste, it should be noted that continuous and precise supervision over hospital management is necessary for the safety of the patients, the personnel, and the public.
