Abstract

 So far those who have been engaged in compiling the dictionaries of Persian slangs, have merely recorded slang expressions and perhaps slang terms and have paid no attention to the vulgar meanings of the simple or compound words (e.g.ke meaning "when" and taqviyat kardan meaning "10 have strong foods"). as a result, a great number of the foreign translators have made great mistakes through translating the present-day Persian writings, because they have failed to understand the vulgar meanings of the non-slang words (e.g. boğz meaning "the squeeze of the neck before one bursts into tears" or sangīn va rangīn not in its literal meaning, but in its metaphorical meaning "decorous"). For instance hālā apart from its meaning "now/at present" has also about eight vulgar meanings which have been mentioned here. A large number of the old meanings of the words which are out of use or obsoleted in today's standard Persian, are still alive and prevalent in the vulgar language (e.g. the conjunction ke which means "because" and "the one who"). All these words along with the various meanings of the grammatical words such as āyā (a question word), az "of", agar "if",ammā "but", bā "with", bāz "again", be "to", tā "to/till", rā, va "and", ham have been defined by different examples in this book, since it is merely the example that can lead the reader to the proper meaning of a word.
