Abstract

The phenomenon commonly known as "PUBLIC UNDERSTANDING OF SCIENCE" has turned into a systematic part of the agenda of educational and policy-planning institutions in the West since 1980s. The same phenomenon has, with some delay, found its way in the policies of developing countries as well as international NGOs. Nevertheless, the history of the activities in the field of "PUBLIC UNDERSTANDING OF SCIENCE" goes back much further than 1980s albeit the extent to which this activity was being pursued in the past was much more limited. The present paper deals with the development of the phenomenon of "PUBLIC UNDERSTANDING OF SCIENCE" since the 17th century. The aim of the paper is to shed light on the changes which has taken place in the individual and collective approaches towards PUBLIC UNDERSTANDING OF SCIENCE and highlight the elements in these approaches which have remained intact. It is hoped that the outcome of the present research assists those who are involved in developing policies for PUBLIC UNDERSTANDING OF SCIENCE in Iran.
