Abstract

Anxiety is an unpleasant emotional state that involves a complex combination of emotions that include fear <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fear>, apprehension <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apprehension>, and worry <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Worry>. It is often accompanied by physical sensations such as heart palpitations <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heart_palpitations>, nausea <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nausea>, chest pain <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chest_pain>, shortness of breath <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shortness_of_breath>, or tension headache <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tension_headache>. Valerian has uses in herbal <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herb> medicine as a sedative <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sedative>. Studies shown efficacy of valerian as a treatment for insomnia. The purpose of this study was to characterize the putative anxiolytic-like effects of valepotriates (dichloromethane extracts of valerian) using the elevated plus maze (EPM) in rats. valepotriates was dissolved in DMSO and orally administered at doses from 0.025 to 1 g/kg to adult male wistar rats , 0.5 , 1.5 and 3 hours before behavioral evaluation in an EPM respectively. Control rats were treated with an equal volume of DMSO. Single treatment of valepotriates (at 0.025, 0.0.05, 0.1, and 0.2 g/kg) significantly increased time-spent and arm entries into open arms of EPM versus control groups (p<0.05). However, no changes in the locomotor activity . This result suggest that valepotriates might proved to be an effective anxiolytic agent.
