ROLE OF RURAL COOPERATIVES IN MARKETING OF AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTS: CASE STUDY KHUZESTAN PROVINCE

Abstract

 WITH RESPECT TO INCREASING THE IMPORTANCE OF MARKETING OF AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTS, THE ROLE OF RURAL COOPERATIVES IN KHUZESTAN PROVINCE IN THIS REGARD WAS STUDIED. DATA WERE COLLECTED FROM A SAMPLE OF MEMBER COOPERATIVES AND 480 MEMBERS OF RURAL COOPERATIVES WERE INTERVIEWED. BASED ON THE RESULTS AMOUNTS OF SUPPLIED PRODUCTS TO MARKET FOR EACH MEMBER WERE LESS THAN TEN TONES FOR A MAJORITY OF PRODUCERS. MORE THAN 95 PERCENT OF PRODUCERS SUPPLIED ABOUT 95 PERCENT OF THEIR PRODUCTS. PRODUCERS AND CONSUMER PRICES WERE FLUCTUATED. THE WHEAT PRODUCED BY ALMOST ALL OF MEMBERS WAS BOUGHT BY RURAL COOPERATIVES AND FOR OTHER PRODUCTS THESE COOPERATIVES HAD A LIMITED ROLE IN BUYING. SOME OF THE LIMITATIONS OF SELLING WHEAT WERE: LIMITED NUMBER OF BUYING CENTERS, UNSUITABLE WEIGHT FACILITIES AND WAITING FOR DELIVERY OF THEIR PRODUCTS. FOR OTHER PRODUCTS, SALE PROBLEMS WERE: LACK OF APPROPRIATE BUYERS IN HARVESTING TIME, INSTABILITY OF MARKET AND HIGH FLUCTUATION OF PRICES. ABILITY OF COOPERATIVES FOR MARKETING SERVICES OF PRODUCTS WERE LOW. THE RESULTS OF STUDY INDICATED THAT ALTHOUGH EXISTING SITUATION PERMITS EXPANSION OF COOPERATIVES IN MARKETING OF AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTS, BUT LITTLE HAD BEEN DONE IN THIS RESPECT.
