Abstract

 THE AIM OF THIS STUDY IS TO EVALUATE THE FEASIBILITY OF SATISFYING THE SIMULTANEOUS CLINICAL STABILITY AND EQUILIBRIUM CONDITION IN BOTH SIMPLIFIED AND COMPLEX MUSCULOSKELETAL MODEL OF HUMAN LUMBAR SPINE. A 3-D FINITE ELEMENT MODEL OF LUMBAR SPINE (L1-S1) HAS BEEN MADE USING LINEAR ELASTIC BEAM ELEMENTS AND THE BEHAVIOR OF THE MODEL WAS ANALYZED UNDER DIFFERENT LOADING CONDITIONS WITH TWO MUSCLE MODELING STRUCTURE: 1) A SIMPLIFIED MODEL WITH 10 MUSCLES ATTACHED TO A SINGLE LEVEL OF THE SPINE (AT A TOP PLATE MOUNTED AT L1 LEVEL), 2) A MORE COMPLEX MODEL WITH 132 MUSCLES CONNECTED TO THE DIFFERENT LEVEL OF THE SPINE. IT WAS SHOWN THAT THE SIMPLIFIED MUSCUSKELETAL MODEL IS NOT CAPABLE TO SATISFY THE EQUILIBRIUM AND STABILITY CONDITIONS UNDER EXTERNAL LOADS AND WILL HAVE LARGE DISPLACEMENTS IN THESE LOADING CONDITIONS.
