Abstract

 IN THE RECENT YEARS DUE TO INCREASING ATHLETIC ACTIVITY AND CAR ACCIDENTS, THERE HAS BEEN INCREASING INCIDENTS OF JOINT CARTILAGE DAMAGE. THE NATURAL CARTILAGE REPAIR IS SLOW AND IN MANY INSTANCES EVEN IRREPARABLE. THEREFORE THE FIELD OF CARTILAGE ENGINEERING AND RECONSTRUCTION HAS BECOME MORE POPULAR. ONE OF THE BEST MATERIALS FOR THIS APPLICATION IS POLYVINYL ALCOHOL WHICH DUE TO ITS HIGH WATER CONTENT AND LOW REJECTION RATES HAS RECEIVED A LOT OF ATTENTION. IN THIS STUDY THE WATER ABSORPTION RATE CONTENT HAS BEEN INCREASED TO 78% USING GAMMA RADIATION TO GRAFT VINYL PYRROLIDINE ON TO A POLYVINYL ALCOHOL FILM. IN ORDER TO IMPROVE THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES TWO METHODS WERE USED: FREEZE THAWING AND ANNEALING. EXPERIMENTS SHOWED THAT THE ANNEALING TEMPERATURE AND THE NUMBER OF FREEZE-THAW CYCLES I PROVED THE MATERIAL'S MECHANICAL PROPERTIES. THE OPTIMUM ANNEALING TEMPERATURE AND DURATION WERE 120°C FOR ONE HOUR. FOR FREEZE-THAWING OF SAMPLES RESULTS SHOWED THAT AT LEAST 3 CYCLES ARE REQUIRED. FINALLY THE PREPARED FILMS WE PLACED IN VARIOUS VINYL PYRROLIDINE SOLUTIONS WITH DIFFERENT CONCENTRATIONS. THE SOLUTIONS WERE THEN SUBJECTED TO GAMMA RADIATION TO PRODUCE DESIRED YIELDS. RESULTS SHOWED THAT A 40% VINYL PYRROLIDINE SOLUTION WITH 15 KGY EXPOSURE RATE WERE OPTIMAL. VARYING THE GRAFTING PARAMETERS RESULTED IN DIFFERENT MECHANICAL PROPERTIES, WATER CONTENT AND BIOCOMPATIBILITY.
