Abstract

From the time that Nasr bn Muzahim Munqari (d.212 A.H/ 827) wrote Waqat Siffin and Ibn Sa`d (d.230 A.H/ 845) wrote al-Tabaqat on up to the present, authors of historical, rijal and hadith works have mentioned the name of a group of Imam Ali's companions in the era of his caliphate as Shorta al-Khamis. However none of those sources gave us a clear picture of this group and their activities. Thus, the author of the present paper tries to find answers for some questions in this regard while making a comparison between existing documents and evidences. The questions are as follows: what kind of organization is the Shorta al-Khamis? What is its mission? Why are they called Shorta al-Khamis? How many of them are hadith reporters? How effective is the analysis of the indications of this term in hadith studies? The author finally concludes that in spite of efforts made by rijali experts to utilize this term in authentication and justification of hadith reporters (mass description of companions under this title) has no remarkable and practicable effect in hadith studies.
