FORMATION OF NANO SIZED NICKEL COATED GRAPHITE BY ADDING THE ANIONIC SURFACTANT

Abstract

 AN ELECTROLESS TECHNIQUE WAS DEVELOPED TO COAT NICKEL ON GRAPHITE WITH HIGH NICKEL DEPOSITION RATE AND BATH STABILITY. THE GRAPHITE WERE PRE-TREATED BY PUTTING THE ELECTRODES IN COLORIDE STANNOUS AND PALLADIUM COLORIDE BATH. AS IT PUBLISHED IN LITERATURE ELECTROLESS NICKEL (EN) DEPOSITION BATH IS KNOWN TO HAVE A MAJOR PROBLEM OF SUDDEN BATH DECOMPOSITION, WHICH RESULTS IN AN INCREASE IN THE OPERATING COST AND THE GENERATION OF ENVIRONMENTALLY HAZARDOUS WASTE. BATH STABILIZERS ARE NORMALLY ADDED TO EXTEND ITS LIFE. IN THIS PAPER, THE EFFECTS OF SOME ELECTROLESS NICKEL BATH STABILIZERS, POTASSIUM SODIUM TARTARAT TETRAHYDRATE, ACETATE PLUMB AND SODIUMDODECYL SULFATE WERE INVESTIGATED. IT WAS OBSERVED THAT THE STABILIZERS HAVE A MAJOR EFFECT ON THE EN DEPOSITS. IT IS ALSO SHOWN THAT THE ADDITION OF SURFACTANT HAS AN EFFECT ON THE NANO-GRAIN SIZE OF THE EN DEPOSIT. SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPY (SEM) IMAGES, XRD PATTERN OF THE COMPOSITES ALL CONFIRM THE DEPOSITION OF NICKEL.
