Abstract

 THE MIXING BEHAVIOR OF THE LIQUID PHASE IN A RECTANGULAR INTERNAL LOOP AIRLIFT REACTOR (RALR) WITH DOUBLE DOWN COMER WAS INVESTIGATED IN TERMS OF MIXING TIME, CIRCULATION TIME AND AXIAL DISPERSION COEFFICIENT. THE REACTOR (LENGTH: 12 CM, WIDTH: 2 CM, HEIGHT: 100 CM) WAS SPLIT INTO TWO DOWN COMERS AND A RISER BY TWO VERTICAL BAFFLES. IN ALL THE EXPERIMENTS, TAP WATER AND AIR WERE USED AS THE OPERATING FLUIDS. SUPERFICIAL GAS VELOCITY WAS VARIED FROM 1 TO 3 CM/S. CHARACTERIZATION OF MIXING PARAMETERS WAS PERFORMED BY DETERMINATION OF THE RESIDENCE TIME DISTRIBUTION (RTD) CURVES OBTAINED USING A CLASSICAL PULSE RESPONSE TECHNIQUE (CONDUCTIVITY). AXIAL DISPERSION MODEL (ADM) WAS ALSO APPLIED TO THE EXPERIMENTAL RTD RESULTS. AS EXPECTED, WITH INCREASING GAS FLOW RATE THE MIXING AND CIRCULATION TIME DECREASE AND AXIAL DISPERSION COEFFICIENT INCREASES. IN THIS RECTANGULAR GEOMETRY, THE DISPERSION COEFFICIENT HAS A LINEAR TENDENCY AT LOW RANGE OF SUPERFICIAL GAS VELOCITIES. MOROVER, IT WAS CONSISTENT WITH THE PREDICTIONS OF THE WELL-ESTABLISHED CORRELATIONS.
