Abstract

 POLYCYCLIC AROMATIC HYDROCARBONS (PAHS) ARE TOXIC POLLUTANTS WHICH ARE WIDESPREAD IN THE ENVIRONMENT. THESE COMPOUNDS SHOWED CARCINOGENIC AND MUTAGENIC PROPERTIES AND ARE LISTED BY THE UNITED STATES ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY (USEPA) AS PRIORITY POLLUTANTS. IN THIS STUDY 13 BACTERIAL STRAINS WERE ISOLATED FROM THREE CONTAMINATED SITES OF TEHRAN OIL REFINERY. PAH BIODEGRADATION EXPERIMENTS WERE CONDUCTED IN AQUEOUS PHASE AND GC ANALYSIS WAS USED FOR MEASURING PAHS CONCENTRATIONS.BIODEGRADATION RATES OF THREE PAHS, PHENANTHRENE, ANTHRACENE AND PYRENE WITH 50 MG/L INITIAL CONCENTRATION WERE OBTAINED ALONG 30 DAYS. THE DEGRADATION OF INDIVIDUAL PAHS (PHENANTHRENE, ANTHRACENE AND PYRENE) WAS IN THE RANGE OF 34.5-65.7%, 21.4-92% AND 27.2- 90.1%, RESPECTIVELY. IN THE NEXT STEP AND IN THE SAME CONDITIONS, THE BIODEGRADATION RATES OF HE THREE PAHS WERE INVESTIGATED IN MIXTURE. DECREASE IN DEGRADATION RATE OF THREE RING PAHS AND INCREASE IN PYRENE DEGRADATION, A FOUR RING PAH, SHOWED THAT PYRENE WAS DEGRADED BY CO-METABOLISM. THE USE OF COMETABOLISM IN BIOREMEDIATION TECHNIQUES INCREASES THE BIODEGRADATION RATE OF HIGH MOLECULAR WEIGHT PAHS.
