REMOVAL OF A DYESTUFF FROM CONTAMINATED WATER BY NANO HYBRID OF ZNO/ACTIVATED CARBON/POLYURETHANE

Abstract

 THE PRESENCE OF ORGANIC DYES IN AQUEOUS ENVIRONMENTS CAN CAUSE DETRIMENTAL EFFECTS ON AQUATIC LIFE AND HUMAN HEALTH. DUE TO THE ADVERSE EFFECTS OF DISCHARGED ORGANIC DYES ON HUMAN HEALTH, SEVERAL TREATMENT TECHNOLOGIES HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED FOR TREATING COLORED EFFLUENTS. PHOTOCATALYTIC OXIDATION IS A STRONG PROCESS FOR THE TREATMENT OF A WIDE VARIETY OF ORGANIC CONTAMINATIONS IN WATER. IN PHOTOCATALYTIC OXIDATION, THE HIGHLY REACTIVE HYDROXYL RADICALS (•OH) ARE GENERATED AS A RESULT OF THE INTERACTION BETWEEN A SEMICONDUCTOR PHOTOCATALYST AND UV IRRADIATION. ZINC OXIDE (ZNO) DUE TO ITS HIGH CATALYTIC EFFICIENCY, LOW COST, NON-TOXIC NATURE AND EXCELLENT CHEMICAL STABILITY IS AN IMPORTANT PHOTOCATALYST. ZNO HAS BEEN EXTENSIVELY STUDIED FOR THE REMOVAL OF CONTAMINANTS FROM WATER AND AIR [1-3]. IN ZNO SLURRY SYSTEMS THE CATALYST SEPARATION IS DIFFICULT, SO THE ZNO NANOPARTICLES ARE IMMOBILIZED ON A SOLID SURFACE. IN THIS RESEARCH, THE PERFORMANCE OF IMMOBILIZED ZINC OXIDE NANOPARTICLES ON THE ACTIVATED CARBON/ POLYURETHANE SUBSTRATES ON DECOLORIZATION OF DYE SOLUTION WAS INVESTIGATED FOR THE FIRST TIME. ZNO WAS SYNTHESISED BY SOL-GEL METHOD AND IMMOBILIZED ON PREPARED ACTIVATED CARBON/POLYURETHANE SYSTEM BY IMMERSING METHOD AND USING ULTRASONIC WAVES. X-RAY DIFFRACTION WAS USED TO CONFIRM THE SYNTHESIS OF ZNO NANOPARTICLES. ACCORDING TO THIS ANALYSIS ZNO NANOPARTICLES ARE 31.5 NM. FE-SEM IMAGES CONFIRMED THE IMMOBILIZATION OF ZNO ON ACTIVATED CARBON/ POLYURETHANE. THE HYBRID WAS USED FOR DECOLORIZATION OF AN AQUEOUS SOLUTION OF REACTIVE RED 66. THE RESULTS SHOWED EFFICIENCY OF DECOLORIZATION APPROXIMATELY IS 87% AFTER 150 MINUTES UNDER UV IRRADIATION.
