Abstract

 SAFETY VALVES ARE THE MOST COMMON MEANS TO PROTECT MECHANICAL EQUIPMENTS AGAINST OVER PRESSURE. IN A DIFFERENT APPROACH INSTRUMENT DEVICES CAN BE USED FOR PROTECTION PURPOSE. THIS ESSAY INTRODUCES USING HIGH INTEGRITY PROTECTION SYSTEM (HIPS) AND AT THE END HIPS DESIGN FOR FLARE SYSTEM IN ABADAN REFINERY, PHASE 3 HAS BEEN STUDIED.BY IMPLEMENTING HIPS, FLARE HEADERS ARE GETTING SMALLER, PIPES AND VESSELS SIZES ARE REDUCED AND FLARE HEIGHT RESULTING FROM FLAMMABLE GAS RELIEF TO FLARE IS SHORTENED. THIS PLAN NOT ONLY MINIMIZES NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF RADIATION ON NEIGHBORING EQUIPMENTS BUT ALSO PREVENTS WASTING CONSIDERABLE AMOUNTS OF HYDROCARBONS WHICH HAVE BEEN UNDERGONE DIFFERENT AND SOPHISTICATED PROCESSES AND ARE PRECIOUS SOURCES OF RICH CARBON. DECREASING EMISSIONS INCLUDING SOX AND NOX POLLUTANTS TO ATMOSPHERE AND REDUCING GREEN HOUSE EFFECTS ARE ALSO OF UNDENIABLE ADVANTAGES OF THIS SYSTEM.
