A NEW KINETIC SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC DETERMINATION OF SULFIDE USING FIXED TIME METHOD

Abstract

 BACKGROUND: THE MONITORING OF SULFIDE IS REQUIRED IN A VARIETY OF ENVIRONMENTAL AND INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS [1]. IT IS TOXIC AT HIGH CONCENTRATION AND USUALLY REGARDED AS BOTH AN ENVIRONMENTAL AND INDUSTRIAL POLLUTANT. THERE ARE LIMITS ON THE TOTAL LEVEL OF SULFIDE PERMITTED IN WASTE DISCHARGES IN MOST COUNTRIES [2]. SULFIDE IS TOXIC TO FISH AND OTHER AQUATIC ORGANISMS AND CAN BE RESPONSIBLE OF THE DECREASE IN WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANTS EFFICIENCY [3]. VARIETIES OF METHODS HAVE BEEN USED FOR DETERMINATION OF SULFIDE. HOWEVER, THESE METHODS HAVE DIFFERENT DISADVANTAGES. BUT KINETIC SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC METHODS CAN BE IMPLEMENTED ON VERY SIMPLE, RAPID AND INEXPENSIVE EQUIPMENT AND PROVIDE LOW LEVEL DETERMINATION. DUE TO IMPORTANCE DETERMINATION OF LOW RANGE OF SULFIDE, RESEARCHERS CONCERNED TO IT IN RECENT YEARS [4]. IN THIS PAPER A RAPID AND SIMPLE KINETIC METHOD IS DESCRIBED FOR BASED ON THE BLEACHING EFFECT OF SULFIDE ON MALACHITE GREEN.METHODS: SUITABLE VOLUMES OF BUFFER, MALACHITE GREEN AND SULFIDE MIXED WITH DESCRIBED ORDER AT OPTIMUM CONDITIONS. AFTER DISTINCT LAG TIME (3 SECONDS), THE REACTION WAS FOLLOWED BY MEASURING THE DECREASE IN ABSORBANCE OF THE SOLUTION AT 615 NM FOR 15 AND 25 SECONDS FROM INITIATION OF THE REACTION. WITH USE OF KINETIC METHODS, DECREASES IN THE ABSORBANCE ARE PROPORTIONAL TO THE CONCENTRATION OF SULFIDE.RESULTS: THE MECHANISM OF REACTION PROPOSED AND VERIFIED WITH MOLE RATIO AND JOB’S CONTINUOUS VARIATIONS. THE REACTION CONDITIONS WERE OPTIMIZED TO GIVE A HIGH REACTION RATE. THE WORKING CURVE IS LINEAR OVER THE CONCENTRATION RANGE 50-1200 NG/ML OF SULFIDE, WITH A FIXED TIME METHOD AT THE FIRST 15 AND 25 SECONDS FROM INITIATION OF THE REACTION. THE STATISTICAL PARAMETERS SUCH AS LOD AND LOQ AND OPTICAL PARAMETER LIKE MOLAR ABSORPTIVITY CALCULATED AND REPORTED. THE STANDARD DEVIATION AND RECOVERY FOR STANDARD SOLUTIONS OF 1000, 500, 200 NG/ML WAS STUDIED AND PRESENTED. THE INTERFERING EFFECTS OF VARIOUS IONS AND THE EFFECTIVE OF DIFFERENT MICELLES MEDIA ON SULFIDE DETERMINATION WERE INVESTIGATED. DIFFERENT KINETIC PARAMETERS LIKE DG≠, DE≠, DS≠, DH≠ AND A COMPUTED. TO CONFIRM THE USEFULNESS OF THE PROPOSED METHOD, SULFIDE WAS DETERMINED IN RIVER, SPRING AND DRINKING SAMPLES.CONCLUSION: THE PROPOSED KINETIC SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC TECHNIQUE IS SIMPLE, FAST AND SENSITIVE. THE SYSTEM GIVES A WIDE OPERATIONAL RESPONSE RANGE FOR DETERMINATION OF SULFIDE IN LOW RANGE. THE DESCRIBED METHOD WAS SUCCESSFULLY APPLIED IN NATURAL WATER SAMPLES.
