SIMULTANEOUS DETERMINATION OF ATENOLOL AND PROPRANOLOL USING DERIVATIVE SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC METHOD

Abstract

 DERIVATIVE SPECTROPHOTOMETRY IS INTRODUCED IN COMPARISON WITH NORMAL SPECTROPHOTOMETRY DUE TO THE ENHANCED SENSITIVITY AND SELECTIVITY. THE PEAKS WHICH HAVE OVERLAP IN NORMAL SPECTROPHOTOMETRY ARE SEPARATED WHIT DERIVATIVE SPECTROPHOTOMETRY [1]. IT THROUGH SIGNAL AMPLIFICATION AND NOISE LOWERING INCREASES THE SENSITIVITY AND ALSO THE DERIVATIVE PEAKS HAVE A RELATIVE SHARPNESS THAT IMPROVES SELECTIVITY [2]. ATENOLOL AND PROPERANOLOL BECAUSE OF VARIOUS REASONS SUCH AS HYPERTENSION, RELIEF ANGINA PAIN, PREVENTION OF MIGRAINE HEADACHES, AND TREATMENT OF IRREGULAR HEARTBEAT IS PRESCRIBED. THESE DRUGS ARE BEING USED FOR PREVENTING THE SECOND HEART ATTACK IN PEOPLE WHO HAVE HAD ONE BEFORE [3]. IN THIS STUDY, DERIVATIVE SPECTROPHOTOMETRY WAS USED FOR SIMULTANEOUS DETERMINATION OF ATENOLOL AND PROPERANOLOL. SPECTRAL STUDIES SHOWED THAT THE THIRD DERIVATIVE IS APPROPRIATE FOR DETERMINING THESE TWO MEDICINES. ISODIFFERENTIAL POINTS FOR ATENOLOL AND PROPERANOLOL WERE OBTAINED AT 232.0 AND 239.0 NM, RESPECTIVELY. THE EFFECTIVE PARAMETERS SUCH AS TEMPERATURE AND PH WERE INVESTIGATED AND OPTIMIZED (PH=9-10 AND T=10-20OC).CALIBRATION CURVES FOR ATENOLOL IN THE PRESENCE OF PROPERANOLOL (IN THE RANGE OF 0.85 TO 12.85) AND FOR PROPERANOLOL IN THE PRESENCE OF ATENOLOL (IN THE RANGE OF 0.28 TO 6.42MG/ML) WERE LINEAR. THE LIMITS OF DETECTION AND PRECISIONS OF ATENOLOL AND PROPERANOLOL WERE 1.01, 0.22MG/ML AND 0.86, 2.34%, RESPECTIVELY. THE RESULTS FOR THE SIMULTANEOUS DETERMINATION OF ATENOLOL AND PROPERANOLOL WERE SATISFACTORY IN THE SYNTHESIS PHARMACEUTICAL SAMPLES.
