SYNTHESIS OF CHITOSAN BASED NANIONIC SURFACTANTS AND THEIR APPLICATION IN BIODIESEL MICROEMULSION FUELS

Abstract

 CHITOSAN, AS THE MAIN DERIVATIVE OF CHITIN IS OBTAINED BY PARTIAL OR FULL N-DEACETYLATION OF CHITIN AND USED AS A WATER-SOLUBLE POLYELECTROLYTE. BECAUSE OF ITS NON-TOXICITY, BIODEGRADABILITY AND SOLUBILITY UNDER ACIDIC CONDITIONS DUE TO THE PROTOATION OF AMINO GROUPS, IT HAS ATTRACTED A GREAT INTEREST OF RESEARCHERS [1].AMPHIPHILIC MACROMOLECULES BASED ON CHITIN AND CHITOSAN DERIVATIVES MAY BE OBTAINED BY TWO DIFFERENT PROCESSES: EITHER BY CHEMICAL MODIFICATION OF THE MACROMOLECULAR BACKBONE [3] OR BY THE INTERACTION BETWEEN THE HYDROPHILIC CHAINS AND SURFACTANT MOLECULES [4].THE AIM OF PRESENT WORK WAS TO SYNTHESIS NEW SURFACTANT BASED ON CHITOSAN AND EVALUATION OF THEIR PERFORMANCE IN BIODIESEL MICROEMULSION FUELS. AT THE FIRST STEP FOR THE PREPARATION OF LOW MOLECULAR WEIGHT CHITOSAN, THE HIGH MOLECULAR WEIGHT CHITOSAN WAS TREATED WITH DILUTE SULFURIC ACID AT 120˚C. CHITOSAN WAS DISSOLVED IN THE ACIDIC SOLUTION IN A FEW MINUTES, AND WAS DEPOLYMERIZED TO LOW MOLECULAR WEIGHT CHITOSAN BY LONGER TREATMENTS [5].THE HYDROLYZED CHITOSAN WAS SUBSEQUENTLY REACTED WITH STEARYL OR OLEYLCHLORIDE TO OBTAIN DESIRED SURFACTANTS WHICH WERE CHARACTERIZED FT-IR SPECTROSCOPY. THE PREPARED SURFACTANTS WERE SUCCESSFULLY EMPLOYED IN THE PREPARATION OF THE BIODIESEL MICROEMULSION FUELS.
