PREPARATION AND MAGNETIC PROPERTIES OF COFE2O4@PANI-CHROMATE NANOCOMPOSITE WITH CORE/SHELL STRUCTURE

Abstract

 IN RECENT YEARS, CORE/SHELL STRUCTURED COMPOSITE MATERIALS HAVE DROWNED SIGNIFICANT ATTENTION BECAUSE OF THEIR POTENTIAL FOR COMBINING PROPERTIES THAT ARE DIFFICULT TO ATTAIN SEPARATELY WITH THE INDIVIDUAL COMPONENTS. CORE/SHELL MATERIALS COMPRISING OF A FERROMAGNETIC COMPONENT AND A CONDUCTING POLYMER HAVE RECENTLY BEEN INVESTIGATED IN SEVERAL STUDIES [1]. AMONG THE VARIOUS CONDUCTING POLYMERS, POLYANILINE HAS EMERGED AS THE MOST PROMISING CONDUCTING POLYMER DUE TO ITS UNIQUE PROPERTIES [2]. ON THE OTHER HAND, MAGNETIC NANOPARTICLES OF SPINEL FERRITES WERE FOCUSED BY MANY RESEARCHERS BECAUSE OF THEIR INTERESTING ELECTRICAL AND MAGNETIC PROPERTIES. CONSIDERING THESE PROPERTIES, SYNTHESIS OF VARIOUS CORE/SHELL STRUCTURED BASED ON FERRITES WHICH SHOWED HARD MAGNETIZATION ARE ONE OF THE INTERESTING RESEARCH SUBJECTS.IN THIS WORK, COBALT FERRITE (COFE2O4) NANOPARTICLES WERE PREPARED BY COMBUSTION METHOD USING GLYCINE AS A FUEL [3]. IN ORDER TOCOAT COBALT FERRITE WITH POLYANILINE AND THE SYNTHESIS OF COFE2O4@PANI WITH CHROMATE COUNTER ION, IN-SITU OXIDATIVE POLYMERIZATION OF ANILINE WITH CRO3, AS AN OXIDANT, WAS CARRIED OUT IN THE PRESENCE OF COFE2O4. THIS IS THE FIRST EXAMPLE OF PANI COATING WHICH CONTAINS CHROMATE COUNTER ION.THE AS-FABRICATED COFE2O4@PANI-CHROMATE NANOCOMPOSITE, WHICH CONTAINS CENTRAL MAGNETIC CORE WITH A STRONG RESPONSE TO EXTERNAL FIELD, WAS CHARACTERIZED BY FT-IR, XRD AND SEM TECHNIQUES. MAGNETIC CHARACTERIZATION OF THE COMPOSITE WAS CARRIED OUT USING A VIBRATING SAMPLE MAGNETOMETER. BY APPLYING THIS TECHNIQUE, MAGNETIC PARAMETERS, SUCH AS SATURATION MAGNETIZATION (MS), COERCIVITY (HC) AND REMNANT MAGNETIZATION (MR) CAN BE DEDUCED. THE MS AND MR VALUES OF THE NANOCOMPOSITE ARE LESS THAN THOSE OBTAINED FOR NAKED COFE2O4 WHILE THE HC VALUE IS HIGHER THAN THAT OF UNCOATED COFE2O4. THE INCREASED COERCIVITY (HC) VALUE OF THE NANOCOMPOSITE IS DUE TO THE SURFACE ANISOTROPY UPON COATING [4]. THE HIGH VALUE OF COERCIVITY (HC=1484.8OE) REVEALS THAT THE SYNTHESIZED COMPOSITE CAN BE CONSIDERED AS A HARD MAGNETIC MATERIAL. THIS COMPOSITE WHICH CONTAINS CHROMATE COUNTER ION WAS ALSO STUDIED FOR ITS CATALYTIC ACTIVITY FOR SOME ORGANIC AND INORGANIC REACTIONS.
