MODELING THE REACTION FURNACE OF CLAUS PROCESS

Abstract

 MODIFIED CLAUS PROCESS IS THE MAIN PROCESS WHICH RECOVERS ELEMENTAL SULFUR FROM ACID GASES CONTAINING HYDROGEN SULFIDE. IN THIS ARTICLE THE REACTION FURNACE OF AN INDUSTRIAL SULPHUR RECOVERY UNIT WAS MODELED USING EQUILIBRIUM AND COMBINED MODELING. IN THE EQUILIBRIUM MODELING, THE GIBBS FREE ENERGY MINIMIZATION WAS USED WHERAS IN COMBINED MODELING, THE REACTION FURNACE WAS DIVIDED TO FLAME AND ANOXIC ZONES. THE FLAME ZONE WAS MODELED WITH EQUILIBRIUM APPROACH AND ANOXIC ZONE AS ISOTHERMAL PLUG FLOW REACTOR WITH NO PRESSURE DROP. IT HAS BEEN CONCLUDED THAT THE AVERAGE DEVIATION OF EQUILIBRIUM MODELING IS ABOUT 20%. COMBINE MODELING HAS BETTER AGREEMENT WITH EXPERIMENTAL DATA AND HAD AVERAGE DEVIATION OF 18% BUT ITS H2S CONVERSION WAS LOWER THAN EQUILIBRIUM MODEL PREDICTION. THIS REVEALS THAT THE KINETIC MODEL USED IN COMBINE MODELING IS NOT APPROPRIATE AND THEREFORE ANOTHER REACTION SET AND KINETIC MODEL MUST BE CONSIDERED FOR ANOXIC ZONE.
