Abstract

IN THIS STUDY, POLY (ETHYLENE GLYCOL) GRAFTED STARCH (PEG-G-ST) AS A COMPATIBILIZER FOR PLA/TPS BLEND WAS PREPARED VIA TWO STEP REACTION. FIRST MALEATED POLY (ETHYLENE GLYCOL) WAS PREPARED BY REACTING TERMINAL HYDROXYL GROUPS ON PEG MOLECULES WITH MA AND THE PEG MOLECULES WERE END-CAPPED WITH CARBOXYL GROUPS. IN THE SECOND STEP, END-CAPPED PEG MOLECULES REACTED WITH THE ABUNDANT HYDROXYL GROUPS ON THE SURFACE OF STARCH PARTICLES AND WERE CHEMICALLY CONNECTED ONTO STARCH PARTICLES BY ESTER BONDS. THE OCCURRENCE OF REACTIONS WAS CONFIRED USING FOURIER TRANSFORM INFRARED SPECTROSCOPY (FTIR). THE BLENDS WITH DIFFERENT CONCENTRATIONS OF COMPATIBILIZER WERE PRODUCED AND THE EFFECT OF COMPATIBILIZER WAS TRACKED BY DYNAMIC-MECHANICAL–THERMAL ANALYSIS (DMTA). THE RESULTS SHOWED THAT THE COMPATIBILITY WAS ENHANCED BY INCORPORATION OF PEG-G-ST.
