EFFECTS OF STRESS-RELATED NEUROTRANSMITTER SYSTEMS ON MEMORY RECONSOLIDATION

Abstract

 MULTIPLE LINES OF EVIDENCE HAVE SHOWN THAT WHEN A WELL-STABILIZED MEMORY IS REACTIVATED (RECALLED) IT CAN BECOME UNSTABLE (LABILE) AND SUSCEPTIBLE TO FACILITATION OR IMPAIRMENT FOR A DISCRETE PERIOD OF TIME. THIS LABIALIZATION PHASE IS FOLLOWED BY A PROCESS OF STABILIZATION CALLED RECONSOLIDATION. PREVIOUS STUDIES HAVE DEMONSTRATED THAT DIFFERENT PHARMACOLOGICAL MANIPULATIONS CAN DISRUPT RECONSOLIDATION THAT MAY BE ASSOCIATED WITH VULNERABILITY TO AMNESIC AGENTS, LIKE NEUROTRANSMITTER SYSTEM ON MEMORY RECONSOLIDATION. RECENT STUDIES REVEALED THAT STRESS AND ITS RELATED HORMONES (GLUCOCORTICOIDS AND NOREPINEPHRINE) MODULATE THE RECONSOLIDATION OF VARIOUS MEMORIES, INCLUDING SPATIAL AND CONTEXTUAL INFORMATION. IN THIS REVIEW, WE DISCUSS THE EFFECTS OF STRESS-RELATED NEUROTRANSMITTER SYSTEMS ON RECONSOLIDATION OF EMOTIONAL MEMORIES. ALSO WE REVIEW SOME BEHAVIORAL, PHARMACOLOGICAL AND NEUROCHEMICAL STUDIES FROM OUR LABORATORY ON RODENTS, WHICH MIGHT CONTRIBUTE TO OUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE COMPLEX PROCESSES OF MEMORY RECONSOLIDATION. MORE IMPORTANTLY, WE DISCUSS THE POST REACTIVATION (MEMORY RECONSOLIDATION) EFFECTS OF SYSTEMIC AS WELL AS INTRA-AMYGDALA INFUSIONS OF BETA-ADRENERGIC, GABAERGIC, CANNABINOIDS, CHOLINERGIC, DOPAMINERGIC, SEROTONERGIC AND OPIOIDERGIC SYSTEMS ON MEMORY RECONSOLIDATION. OUR FINDINGS INDICATE THAT STRESS MODULATES MEMORY RECONSOLIDATION THROUGH A VARIETY OF NEUROTRANSMITTER SYSTEMS.
