Abstract

 THE DEMAND FOR MINIATURIZED DEVICES WITH HIGH ASPECT RATIOS AND SUPERIOR SURFACES HAS BEEN RAPIDLY INCREASING IN ADVANCED INDUSTRIES. HOWEVER, IT IS DIFFICULT TO ESTABLISH A MODEL THAT CAN ACCURATELY PREDICT THE PERFORMANCE BY CORRELATING THE PROCESS PARAMETERS. THIS RESEARCH ESTABLISHES EMPIRICAL RELATION REGARDING MACHINING PARAMETERS AND THE RESPONSE IN ANALYZING THE SURFACE ROUGHNESS OF THE TI6AL4V ALLOYS. RESPONSE SURFACE METHODOLOGY (RSM) WAS USED TO EXPLORE THE EFFECT OF SUCH CUTTING PARAMETERS AS CUTTING SPEED, FEED RATE AND AXIAL DEPTH OF CUT ON SURFACE ROUGHNESS BASED ON EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS. THE SIGNIFICANT COEFFICIENTS WERE OBTAINED BY PERFORMING ANALYSIS OF VARIANCE (ANOVA) AT 95% LEVEL OF SIGNIFICANCE. IT WAS FOUND THAT THE CUTTING SPEED HAS THE HIGHEST EFFECT ON SURFACE ROUGHNESS, FOLLOWED BY THE FEED AND DEPTH OF CUT. FINALLY, SETTING SPINDLE SPEED AND FEED AT HIGH LEVELS AND AXIAL DEPTH OF CUT AT LOW LEVEL YIELDS THE LOWEST SURFACE ROUGHNESS WITHIN THE RANGE OF CUTTING CONDITIONS APPLIED.
