AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF BRASS AND SILVER WIRES IN THE MACHINING SECTION'S STRUCTURE OF STEEL IN A TUNGSTEN CARBIDE TOOL BY WIRE-CUT PROCESS

Abstract

WIRE-CUT MACHINING IS A NON-TRADITIONAL PROCESS OF FILING IN WHICH A SOURCE OR THE THERMOELECTRIC ENERGY IS USED FOR THE SAKE OF FILING. ELECTRODES CONSUMED IN THE WIRE-CUT ARE MADE OF COPPER, SILVER OR BRASS COVERED BY DIFFERENT COATINGS OF ZINC AND ZINC OXIDE HAVING FORMULAS FOR BETTER CUT. IN THE PRESENT STUDY, SOME PARAMETERS INCLUDING SURFACE SMOOTHNESS AND METALLOGRAPHY OF TWO WIRES (ONE MADE OF BRASS AND THE OTHER MADE OF SILVER) IN MACHINING WERE INVESTIGATED USING THE WIRE-CUT PROCEDURE FOR STEEL IN A TUNGSTEN CARBIDE TOOL. WIRE-CUT MACHINING PROCEDURE IS SIMILAR TO SURFACE HARDENING PROCESS. IN THIS PROCEDURE, THE MACHINED SURFACE BECOMES TOO HOT BECAUSE OF THE FLAME CREATION; THEN IT WILL BE QUICKLY COOL DOWN BY THE DIELECTRIC FLUID. AS IT CAN BE SEEN IN MICROSCOPIC IMAGES, THIS PROCEDURE CAN RESULT IN CARBIDE PARTICLES GROWTH ON THE MATERIAL'S SURFACE. THESE CARBIDE PARTICLES ARE VERY DANGEROUS AND CAN CAUSE FAILURE (BREAK) ON THE SURFACE OF THE WORK PIECE. THE RESULTS OF THE PRESENT STUDY SHOW THAT A BRASS ELECTRODE IS MUCH MORE SUITABLE IN COMPARISON WITH A SILVER ELECTRODE BECAUSE OF SMALLER CARBIDE DIMENSIONS WHICH HAVE BEEN CREATED. THE INVESTIGATED STEEL IN THE CURRENT STUDY WHICH IS USED IN A TUNGSTEN CARBIDE (WC) TOOL WITH ROCKWELL HARDNESS OF 78, IS MORE APPROPRIATE BECAUSE IT DOES NOT CREATE A LOT OF MARTEN SITE STRUCTURES ON THE WORK PIECE’S SURFACE.
