Abstract

 IN THIS PAPER, A NOSE OF A FLYING VEHICLE WAS OPTIMIZED BY USING ADJOINT OPTIMIZATION TECHNIQUES AND DIRECT SEARCH. ADJOINT EQUATION AND DIRECT SEARCH TECHNIQUES, HAVE BEEN RECENTLY CONSIDERED FOR AERODYNAMIC OPTIMIZATION. THESE TECHNIQUES ARE BASED ON GRADIENT OPTIMIZATION TECHNIQUES. FOR FINDING OPTIMAL VALUES THERE IS NEED TO SENSITIVITY VALUES OF DESIGN VARIABLES. THE MAIN ADVANTAGE OF ADJOINT TECHNIQUE IS THAT, SENSITIVITY IS OBTAINED BY SOLVING AN ADDITIONAL EQUATION KNOWN AS THE "ADJOINT EQUATION" INSTEAD OF DIRECTLY CALCULATING THEM. THE PURPOSE OF THIS STUDY WAS MODELING THE FLOW AROUND A AXISYMMETRIC PROJECTILE, AND AERODYNAMIC OPTIMIZATION OF NOSE MINIMIZING AERODYNAMIC DRAG OF PROJECTILE. THE TURBULENCE OF THE FLOW AROUND THE PROJECTILE WAS SIMULATED USING THE SST K-W TECHNIQUE. THE RESULTS SHOWED A 1.5 %, 8.9%, 8.9% AND 8% REDUCTION IN THE AERODYNAMIC DRAG OF PROJECTILE USING AN ADJOINT, THE SIMPLEX DIRECT SEARCH, DIRECT TORCZON AND DIRECT SEARCH OF THE PROJECTILE ROSENBROCK TECHNIQUES RESPECTIVELY.
