Title

ANTIBACTERIAL EFFECTS OF SOME MEDICAL PLANT EXTRACTS ON AEROMONAS HYDROPHILA, YERSINIA RUCKERI AND STREPTOCOCCUS INIAE

Abstract

In this study, the ANTIBACTERIAL EFFECTS of ethanolic extract of 9 medicinal plants, (Nigella sativa, Scutellaria radix and Olea europaea, Zataria multiflora, Punica granatum, Teucrium polium, Aloe vera, Silybum marianum and Echinacea purpurea) whose ANTIBACTERIAL EFFECTS had been reported in mammals pathogenic bacteria, on 3 pathogenic bacteria (Aeromonas hydrophila, YERSINIA RUCKERI and STREPTOCOCCUS INIAE) were evaluated. Standard microdilution method was used to evaluate the Minimum Bactericidal Concentration value (MBC) and Minimum Inhibitory Concentration value (MIC) of each extract. Then, equal amount of MIC value of each extract was added to 5mm diameter wells in Muller- Hinton Agar. The inhibitory zone of bacterial growth for each extract was measured and compared to positive and negative control. Results showed that the extracts of Zataria multiflora and Punica granatum had the highest ANTIBACTERIAL EFFECTS with MIC value of 0.125 mg/ml. Nigella sativa, Scutellaria radix and Olea europaea had the moderate antibacterial activity with MIC & MBC value less than 2 mg/ml. Other extracts (Teucrium polium, Aloe vera, Silybum marianum and Echinacea purpurea) showed no or very slight antibacterial activity against these three bacteria. The inhibitory zone of bacterial growth around the wells containing different extracts confirmed the mentioned results in microdilution method. It can be concluded that 1- susceptibility of fish pathogenic bacteria to antibacterial agents (such as herbal extracts) is different from human pathogenic bacteria, and 2- regarding the high antibacterial power of Zataria multiflora, Punica granatum extracts, it is necessity to work on how they can be used in control and treatment of bacterial fish diseases.
