INTEGRATED PLANNING FOR ENERGY SAVING IN THE INDUSTRIAL SECTOR OF IRAN

Abstract

 This study constructs a model for optimization of energy use in the INDUSTRIAL SECTOR of Iran, as an integrated network, using the Energy Flow Optimization Model (EFOM). The most important contribution of the study is prioritization amongst operational modalities of managing energy use in industry, with respect to their effectiveness.Results obtained, using the subsidized prices in effect in the years 1383 (2004) to 1386 (2007), the energy saving potential of ELECTRIC ENGINES, COMPRESSED AIR compressors and steam producing boilers are respectively 8.5, 30 and 10 per cent.For COOLING purposes, use of absorption chillers instead of compression ones is recommended. Due to the low efficiency of absorption systems, use of natural gas will increase relative to electricity in compression systems. However, if one takes into account the conversion factor of fossil fuels into electricity, there will be net energy saving from the switchover due to the larger decrease in energy use for power generation. Use of absorption systems, particularly through use of cheap heat energy derived from power stations is recommended. Making use of appropriate energy saving techniques and optimal reallocation amongst different sources of energy can reduce the demand for electricity by 225 billion KWH and diesel and heavy fuel oil by the equivalent of 55.3 and 19.6 million tons of crude oil equivalents, while increasing use of natural gas by 50 billion cubic meters over a 20 year period. Based on prevailing subsidized energy prices in Iran, this will produce a savings of 54.4 trillion Rials per year. This saving will result from an annual expenditure of 14.45 trillion Rials, implying a benefit-cost ratio of 7 to 3. If one takes into account actual international prices of different energy sources, the projected savings would be even greater.
