Abstract

Introduction: The aim of this study was to compare Family pathology in the process and content model in families with high and low resilience. Method: The method of the present study was descriptive survey type and the statistical population of the study was 6000 parents of Shiraz middle school students in 2019-2020 academic year. The sample size was 361 people who randomly selected by simple random sampling method. To collect data, Family Process and Content scales of Samani (2008) and Family resilience inventory of Sikbi (2005) were used. Data analyzed by SPSS 23 software. Results: Findings showed that there is a significant difference between two groups of families with high and low resilience in the subscales of job and education, time to be together, financial resources, physical appearance and social status and physical and mental health. Finally, coping skills, cohesion and mutual respect and religious believes in the family with high resilience are higher than the family with low resilience, but the mean scores of decision-making and problem-solving subscales and communication skills in the family with low resilience are higher than those with High resilience. Conclusion: It can be concluded that Problem-free (healthy) families functionally work to achieve goals and can adopt themsleves better with new situations. In the countrary, Problematic families have low quality in diffrenet aspects of their lives include resilience. Extended abstract Introduction Family is a social and natural system with a complicated emotional structure. Consecuentally, the most important function of a family is to prepare a safe psychological atmosphere for the members,in the other words, family has a protective role for its members against hardships and is a safe shelter for its members in difficult situations. However, family might get suffered from pathological factors. So, not only it might become incapable of playing its roles in protection of the members but also harm the members itself. What, eventually will be led to collapse of the family and even the society gets suffered from too. One of the models on this topic is Family Process-Content (FPC) model by Samani (1). In this model, with two Systemic and Conflict approaches, 3 major aspects of a family –, include Family Process, Family Content and Family Social context-analyses and can present a psychological profile. Based on FPC model, functionality of a model depends on Family process, Family Contents and social context. Family Process includes all functions a family uses to organize and adopt its members with emotional, cognitive and social events. For example, in the Process, factors like communicational skills, problem solving skills, Flexibility, Parenting, Decision making etc can be studied. Family content includes psychological and physical health of Family members, income, education, number of members, age, sex, race, nationality etc. and social base means believes and standards a family has inside of the society (2). Family pathology, in the other hand, refers to the factors which threatens psychological wellbeing of a family. By analyzing factors mentioned in process and content, experts can have a better understanding of pathological elements which can affect functions and dysfunctions of a family (3). resilience is an important variable in positive psychology. Different scholars presented different definitions for resilience. Sikbi, defines resilience as effective flexibility when countering hardships. In the other words, by resilience a person can have enough adaptation with stress and threats. (4). Enhancement of resilience leads people to know themselves better and also improves self-management skills. (5). However, families in recent years, experience devastating changes. Each change can have challenges with it so it is needed to prepare new strategies so that family as a social structure keeps the function. At this point, increase of resilience can be a useful method for families to overcome problems and keep supporting members. As a result, family relations, believes, spirituality, emotions, and organization of family can play an important role for this purpose (6). By these definitions, we must say that resilience in a family reveals its benefits when members face with a problem, with resilience, they can stay cohesive. In the other word, resilience leads to good results despite being in a difficult situation. At this point, more studies are needed to understand role of resilience in wellbeing of family members, educational success and positive adoptation with challenges. So, this study tried to answer this question that is there a difference between Family pathology in FPC model in families with high and low resilience? Methods The method of the study was descriptive and the statistical population, were 6000 parents of middle school students in Shiraz in 2019-2020 academic year. 361 members of the statistical population were randomly assigned into the sample. To collect data, Family process and content scales of Samani and family resilience inventory of Sikbi were used. Data were analyzed using SPSS 23 software. Findings The results showed that there is a significant difference between two groups of families with high and low resilience in the subscales of job and education, time to be together, financial resources, physical appearance and social status and physical and mental health. Finally, coping skills, cohesion and mutual respect and religious beliefs in the family with high resilience are higher than the family with low resilience, but the mean scores of decision-making and problem-solving subscales and communication skills in the family with low resilience are higher than those with High resilience. Discussion Less problematice bahviours in families can help members to concentrate on goals instead of spending energy on nonscence behaviours. However, a healthy family uses helpful behaviours in order to improve a safe atmosphere for the members and actualiztion of capabilities of them. With high Family content (like high income, good job, high education, having a good house to live in, mental and physical health etc) family system can succesfully educate children and shape a descent relationship between parents and their children. As a result, such a family can effectively act when facing difficult situations. In the countrary, families with problematic content and process are unable of caring about the needs of the members so that their interactions can be harmful. At this point, teaching resilience might have an important and beneficial role. Conclusion The results of this study can be helpful for families and Family Conselling centers to care more about resilience and its benefitial role in enhancement of functions of family. In order to reduce pathological problems among familes, resilience can be thought to families in order to deacrease problematic behaviours as possible.
