Background: due to the resistance of microorganisms against antibiotics, using medicinal plants to achieve the new compounds and overcome them is essential. In this study the effective compounds and antibacterial effects of rosemary essential oil on Escherichia coli, as one of the most common pathogenic bacteria was investigated and its kinetics was determined. Methods: After collecting plant from grown plants in Kerman's climate and drying it, the extraction of essential oil was done by hydrodistillation method. GC analysis was performed for Essential oil and compounds were identified. The antimicrobial activities were tested by the disc diffusion technique and were determined by minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBC). The kinetic of the essential oil on bacteria was determined. Results: Twenty compounds were identified in the rosemary essential oils, 82.09% of which contained 1,8 Cineole, Borneo, α-pinen, Camphor, Linalool, Camphene, limonene and Verbenone. The diameters of the inhibition zones obtained by 32 mg/Disc concentration of essential oil, was more than diameters of the inhibition zones of antibiotics gentamicin, penicillin, streptomycin and erythromycin. The MIC and MBC in the study were obtained as 3000 mg/ml and 3200 mg/ml respectively. Complete death time for destruction of E. coli was also 25 minutes. Conclusion: Rosemary essential oil collected from Kerman with some pharmaceutical antibiotics revealed to have very good antibacterial properties against Escherichia coli.

Background: Hypertension is one of the most important challenges in human health and is now the most important risk factor for cardiovascular and renal diseases. Thus, using new approaches to manage and treat this problem is important. This study aimed to determine the effect of coenzyme-Q10 supplementation on blood pressure in hypertensive patients. Methods: This randomized clinical trial with a three-month supplementation and participation of 60 hypertensive patients was conducted. Patients were randomly divided into two groups; Placebo (PG) and Experimental EG groups. EG received a capsule containing 100 mg coenzyme Q10 daily but PG did not. Systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) blood pressure were measured before and twelve weeks after the intervention. Results: The median SBP before and after the intervention in SG, was 150 and 130 mmHg (P=0.002) respectively. The same figures in the PG was 150 and 147 mmHg (P=0.52), respectively. The median SBP was not significantly different between two groups before intervention, however at the end of the intervention it was significant (p=0.01). The median DBP before and after the intervention was not significantly different between the two groups, and also in each group before and after the intervention was not significant. Conclusion: This study indicates that supplementation of daily 100 mg of coenzyme Q10 during 12 weeks with conventional treatment in patients with moderate hypertension produces a significant reduction in SBP. So it can be recommend to be used it as a supplement for hypertensive patients.

Abstract:

Background: Cervix cancer is the second most common cancer among women worldwide after breast cancer. Health Belief Model (HBM) has been used as an exploratory model to assess why people do not use preventive health services. The aim of this study was to survey cervix cancer screening determinants in 20-65 year old women based on health belief model. Methods: In a cross-sectional design, a total number of 300 women entered in the study using cluster random sampling. Data were collected by a questionnaire which was designed based on HBM. A test-retest approved reliability of the questionnaire and data were analyzed via SPSS software. Results: Means and standard deviations of HBM constructs were as following: knowledge (7.12±2.75), perceived susceptibility (3.45±1.09), perceived severity (5.92±1.54), perceived benefits (2.33±1.22), perceived barriers (14.14±3.6) and cues to action (1.04±1.05). Only 37% had done pap smear test. Regression analysis revealed that knowledge and perceived barriers significantly predict the practicing of pap smear test. Moreover, the number of participants' doing pap smear was predicted by perceived benefits. Conclusion: As the number of participants' doing pap smear test was predicted only by the perceived benefits and the status of doing that was predicted only by knowledge and perceived barriers, and the other constructs of HBM were weak in predicting the behavior, investigating the application of other education models in future studies is recommended.

Abstract:

Background: The contamination of nitrate (NO3−) in potable water has become a serious concern in many parts of the world. Increasing nitrate concentrations in drinking water causes two adverse health effects: induction of “blue-baby syndrome” (methemoglobinemia), especially in infants, and the potential formation of carcinogenic nitrosamines. The objective of this study was to investigate the nitrate removal using modified pumice with iron and determining the adsorption isotherms and kinetic. Methods: This fundamental and practical study was performed in batch conditions and room-temperature. Effects of the process parameters such as contact time, initial concentration and pH were investigated. In this study, Langmuir and Freudlich isotherms was survey to adsorption reactions and to calculate the equilibrium constant. Residual nitrate concentrations determined in 220 and 275 nm using a spectrophotometer (UV/VIS) Shimadzo-1700, Japan. Results: Results of literature indicated that removal nitrate depend on Freundlich (R2>0.998). In the study kf was 0.14 and amount of adsorbed nitrate was qm (mg/g)=0.65 for mass unit of modified Pumice. The pseudo second-order is found in the best fitness with the kinetic data. Conclusion: The results indicate that modified pumice with iron can be employed as an effective adsorbed to removal of nitrate from water solutions.

Abstract:

Background: Hepatitis B (HB) is one of the main health problems. Over 400 million people worldwide have been evaluated as infected patients or chronic carriers. Health care workers (HCWs) are of higher risk for infectious diseases including HBV infected patients. This study aims to evaluate the rate of HBS antibody among the HCWs of Shahid Sadoughi Burn hospital in Yazd. Methods: This cross sectional descriptive study was conducted on 52 staff of the hospital approved vaccinated against HBV. HBS antibody was measured by ELISA in blood samples. Anti HBS titer of more than 10 lu/ml was considered positive. Collected data were analyzed by SPSS (16) software using descriptive data analysis and Fisher exact test. Results: Among the 52 vaccinated staff of the hospital, 90.4% subjects had positive titers but 9.6% were negative. Females had higher titers (96%) than the males (85.2%).There was not a statically significant correlation between age, sex, accurate vaccination intervals and titer of HBS antibody, (P>0.05), but a positive correlation was found between duration after the last dose of vaccine and titer of HBS antibody (P=0.046) Conclusion: More than 90% of the HCWS had immunity against HBV. Considering the importance of health care workers in transmission of blood born infections, a booster dose of hepatitis B vaccine should be delivered to those not having acceptable HBS antibody titer against HBV.
