Diversity and density of phytoplankton in coastal zone of Golestan Province and Gorgan bay was monthly monitored from April to September 2012. Water sampling was performed in three transects and 12 points in coastal zone of Golestan Province and in two stations in the Gorgan bay. Overally, 53 phytoplankton species belonging to five branches were identified; including 30 species of Bacillariophyta, 13 species of Pyrrophyta, 12 species of Chlorophyta, 14 species of Cyanophyta and four species of Euglenophyta. Also in terms of monthly sampling, 39, 43, 35, 46, 47 and 40 species of phytoplankton were respectively identified in April, May, June, July, August and September in the coastal zone of Golestan Province whereas in the bay of Gorgan, 30, 31, 33, 32, 29 and 22 species were respectively recorded in the months of April, May, June and July, August and September. The maximum and minimum chlorophyll-a concentration was found to be 37. 59 and 1. 05 µ g/Lin Grogan bay and coastal zone of Golestan province, respectively. Based on OECD recommendations and the average of chlorophyll-a, Gorgan bay is classified as an etrophic region, whereas coastal zone of Golestan province classified as an oligotrophic region.
