Abstract:

Traumatic events are common but pathologic responses are relatively rare. Although, a number of literatures and philosophies throughout human history have conveyed the idea that there is a personal gain to be found in suffering, positive changes in the aftermath of trauma or posttraumatic growth (PTG) have recently elicited heightened attention by trauma researchers. At the same time, some difficulties encountered in clearly defining the processes associated with subjective feeling of growth following recovery, raise doubts concerning the real or illusory nature of PTG and its adaptive value. To clarify this ambiguity, in this paper, we review three main theoretical perspectives: functional-descriptive model, meta-theoretical person-centered perspective and bio-psycho-social-evolutionary view, then, we go on to discuss the debate of the real or illusory nature of PTG and to address critical aspects toward the related theories and researches.

Abstract:

The research purpose was to look into the relationship between the aspects of counterfactual thinking and the quality of life among the university students. Our sample comprised 183 students drawn from Isfahan University who were selected through cluster random sampling. They underwent the test by receiving and responding to "The World Health Organization Quality Of Life Questionnaires" abbreviated (WHOQOL) and also "Counterfactual Thinking for Negative Events Scale (CTNES)". The results indicated that upward self-referential thinking style is significantly positively correlated with physical health, additionally downward nonreferential thinking style was shown to correlate highly and negatively to physical, mental and environmental health, furthermore upward other-referential thinking style and upward nonreferential thinking style were shown to be significantly, negatively correlated to mental, physical and environmental health. The analysis of the obtained results which were statically confirmed by the regression analysis revealed the predictive power of upward self-referential thinking style in predicting the physical health, mental health, environmental health and social relations and the predictive power of downward nonreferential thinking style in predicting the environmental health.

Results which were statically confirmed by linear regression analysis and path analysis indicated that extroversive characteristics and couples' conciliation were positively, significantly correlated with the level of family functioning and negatively, significantly correlated with neuroticism, moreover, the results obtained from path analysis support the predictive power of conciliation, neuroticism and extroversion in predicting the family functioning level.
