Abstract: 

Purpose: the main goal of this study is to identify and determine the relationship between scientific outputs of countries as an indicator of science and their patents as an indicator of technology. Methodology: the present study was performed based on scientometrics approaches and using Scopus citation database. The registered patents were extracted from the United States Patent and Trademark Office, and scientific documents and scientific outputs of different countries were extracted from Scopus citation database. Data analysis was carried out using SPSS software. Based on the types of data, parametric and non-parametric tests were used, and Spearman’ s correlation test was used for analysis of correlation between the variables. Findings: the results of correlation test between scientific outputs and registered patents in different countries during 2008-2013 period in the patent office and Scopus citation database showed that there is a significant relationship between these two variables. Examining the relationship between patents and the type of scientific documents including books, journal articles and conference articles using Spearman’ s correlation test showed that articles, books and conference articles have a significant relationship with registered patents in 0. 01 level with correlation coefficients 0. 858, 0. 867 and 0. 874 respectively. Correlation coefficients 0. 866, 0. 861, 0. 843 and 0. 834 in humanities and social sciences, technical and engineering sciences, medical sciences and biology respectively at 1% level showed a significant relationship between scientific outputs in subject areas and the number of registered patents in different countries. Conclustion: the results of this study indicate a direct relationship between scientific outputs and registered patents in different countries. It can be concluded that there is a direct relationship between science and technology; meaning that countries with scientific advances also have advanced technology. The results indicate that in Iran, growth in scientific outputs has no significant effect on patent growth. Therefore, it is essential to find a remedy for the low grade of patents in Iran. More attention should be paid to innovation and patents as an indicator of technology in country’ s scientific policies.

Abstract: 

Purpose: The present research aims at exploring the topic trends of post-graduate and research level theses on taxation archived at the library of Iranian National Tax Administration (INTA) to explore how they are in line with the INTA’ s research priorities. Methodology: The method of this study is descriptive survey and content analysis. The number of theses was 482 titles completed during 2010-2014, and a 37 INTA research priorities have been under discussion for the period 2009-2013. For the classification of theses by topic, a topic design including 5 major categories was developed through Delphi methods on the basis of tax experts’ opinions. The data gathering process was conducted through a checklist by using index card. Findings: The findings showed that the topic of “ tax collection authority” (56. 6 %) is ranked top, while the topic of “ Islamic taxes” with 1% only, is ranked the lowest. A majority (55. 4%) belongs to Management fields of study while the share of students of Law was 6. 8%. As for the statistical population addressed by the researchers, the highest share belongs to the Staff (49. 2%) while the lowest share belongs to the tax files with only 5%. Out of 482 theses, 232 titles have been drafted according to the research priorities of the INTA. Conclusion: It can be concluded that the theses in question have not, all the time, been in line with research needs of INTA.

Abstract: 

Purpose: Music information retrieval (MIR) is an interdisciplinary field which has developed significantly in last decade. This study is aimed to represent a comprehensive picture of scientific activities of the field. Methodology: The research has been done by quantitative method and scientometric indicators. Data were analysed in SPSS, using descriptive and analytical statistical methods which were indexed in Scopus citation database in MIR area from beginning till end of 2014. Findings: From 1995 until 2014, 1822 document were indexed in Scopus, but after 2004 scientific products of MIR has been significant and in 2011 has been reached to its maturity. Ichiro Fujinaga is prolific author and Mark B. Sandler is pioneer scientist in the field. USA and Johannes Kepler University were the active country and university respectively. Over 99 percent of the scientific output was written in English and most of them respectively were in computer, human science and engineering topics. Conclusion: The study shows that there is a positive and significant correlation between H-index and the number of co-authors in MIR. Content analysis of the produced papers of MIR can result in better understanding of dominant discourse in MIR. So, doing researches like this has been suggested for future studies.

Abstract: 

Purpose: Co-authorship is an important indicator and the most common measure of formal scientific collaboration. A series of collaborative publications create a social network which can be studied in order to understand the network characteristics. The current research aims to visualize and analyse the co-authorship network of documents published by researchers affiliated to Shahid Beheshti University in humanities, social sciences and art. Methodology: This study is an applied research in which scientometric and social network analysis of the data has been performed. A total of 282 articles in the area of social sciences, humanities and art which specified Shahid Beheshti University as their affiliated institution and indexed by the Thomson Reuters until the 1 March 2014, were selected as the population of study. Microsoft Excel, UCINet and VOSViewer software were utilized for data analysis. Overall structure of the network was investigated using a few macro-level metrics. Additionally, micro-level metrics were adopted to analyze the performance and status of researchers in the network. Findings: Macro-level metrics shows that the co-authorship network of Shahid Beheshti University researchers has low cohesion. According to the findings, the most important and prolific authors in terms of both productivity and centrality measures are: Hamidreza Pouretemad, Vahid Nejati, Mohsen Dehghani, Mohammad Ali Mazaheri, Mojtaba Zarei. Styding the coauthorship network of institutions, the top spots are taken by the Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Tehran University, Tarbiat Modares University and Baghiatallah University of Medical Science (BMSU). Conclusion: The short mean distant (4. 347) coupled with high clustering coefficient (0. 779) indicates that the network seems to exhibit “ small world” network properties.

Abstract: 

Purpose: The evaluation of the links between science and technology has become a critical issue for policy makers in these fields. Several methods are in use for the evaluation of the linkage between science and technology, using citation metrics. This study aims to explore the patent citations intensity in Iranian journal papers in the field of chemistry during 2002-2011. Methodology: This study is a descriptive survey which has been conducted using the reverse citation relations approach. It covers all Iranian journal papers in the field of chemistry indexed in Magiran and SID databases between 2002 and2011, which consists of 3268 titles. Analysis of research data was done by chi-square tests and scatter plots were drawn using S. P. S. S. and Excel. Findings: The results revealed that although the list of references in the articles relating to this field has grown, the citation to patents during the years of the study period has practically remained the same. According to the findings, the ratio of citations to patents was higher in the field of chemical engineering than in the field of chemistry. From the findings it is also apparent that in 80% of cases, the authors have cited US patents much more than the patents from other countries. Conclusion: The insignificant rate of growth in the number of citations to patents in Iranian chemistry papers is an evidence of a weak linkage between science and technology in this field. The study of current status will help the improvement of the linkage between these two sectors.

Abstract: 

Purpose: Increasing share of countries in world scientific production and development level promotion are the most important factors to enhance the presence and influence of countries in international political and economic cooperation. Since development is based on science and technology, the main objective of the present study was to evaluate, compare and analyze the relationships between the indicators measuring the level of human and economic development, and the quality and quantity of research projects in 26 Asian countries. Methodology: Based on information in databases such as UNDP, SIR and Word Bank, a descriptive research method was used. In order to assess the level of development of society, human development indicator, GDP and gender inequality, and for scientific assessment, the Hirsch index (H-Index) and number of published research projects related to the year 2012, were studied. The analysis was done based on canonical correlation analysis and statistical techniques using the statistical software SPSS and STATISTICA. Findings: The results of canonical correlation analysis showed a good linear combination between two sets of development and science assessment variables and scientific indicators predict 71 percent of variations of development indicators Conclusion: Based on the results of canonical correlation analysis, it is evident that there is a high correlation among two indexes of scientific productivity and three indexes of development and the correlation among human development index and is higher. The results can state that conditions of improving the quality and quantity of scientific production can improve their level of development.

Abstract: 

Purpose: This research aims to study co-word relation of Persian articles on agriculture in Kermanshah province indexed in Islamic Science Citation (ISC) database during 2009-2014. Methodology: The persent research is a scientometrics study that uses coword network analysis method. It also employs guidelines of the network analysis method such as centrality rank, betweenness centrality, closeness centrality and density index. UC-net, Netdrive were used for drawing the scientific maps of subjects and collaborations. Ravar Matrix and SPSS software were also used for clustering subjects. Findings: Data analysis showed a rising trend of scientific researches from 2009 to 2014 respectively. In the map of the main topics in agricultural articles, subjects such as wheat, peas, barley, agriculture, water, canola, drouthness, genetics and other matters that are visible on the network, have the highest closeness centrality. In the maps of the main subjects of Kermanshah province agriculture, subjects such as analysis, cultivation, wheat, soil, variety, and statistical methods have been identified. Results of clustering analysis also showed that the core research topics include genetics, wheat, irrigation, seeds and analysis respectively. Among agricultural research works subjects such as floods, agricultural education high school, efficacy, indigenous knowledge and drought tension were identified as emerging issues and new researches in the domain. Conclusion: Results showed that article subjects of the co-word network are dense relatively. Data analysis indicated that documents of agriculture field have been classified in 176 main topics. The mentioned topics have been categorized in 44 subclusters and one main cluster.

Abstract: 

Purpose: This study aims to clarify the status of scientometric indicators in science scientometric organizations. Methodology: This article is a descriptive and library research. Searching in scientific databases and literature review, we identified scientometric organizations as well as scientometric indicators, then extracted the data using a checklist. After classifying the databases, a log was completed for each of them and they finally were analyzed using Microsoft Excel. Findings: scientometric indicators differ in each group of scientometric databases. Impact Factor was used in 22 databases (52. 38) and it was identified as the most applied scientometric indicator. The Hirsch index appeared in at least 15 databases (35. 71) and was ranked second. Among the studied databases, “ university ranking databases” were ranked as top using scientometric indicators (85 indicators) and “ human and financial databases” obtained the second rank using 56 indicators. In other databases, “ JCR” and “ professional or subject index” using seven indicators, jointly located at the sixth lowest rate in the indicators, respectively. Conclusion: The results of the study showed that the scientometrics databases are different in using scientometric indicators, and similar indicators can be introduced for each group of measurement bases.
