Abstract:

Background and Objectives: Considering the geographical location and incident of our country, the role of nurses, as the most populous group among medical staff, in critical conditions is very important. In this regard, the present study was conducted to determine the level of knowledge, readiness and performance of nursing students of Tabriz Nursing and Midwifery Faculty in dealing with unexpected events.Materials and Methods: In a descriptive observational study in 1395, through using simple sampling, level of knowledge, readiness and performance of 41 students of Nursing and Midwifery faculty were assessed by using a questionnaire (including three individual sections, level of knowledge and preparation) and a performance checklist. Validity of these questionnaires and checklist was verified by content validity and retest reliability. Data were analyzed by descriptive and inferential statistics in SPSS version 16.Results: The mean and standard deviation of knowledge and preparation of students were 21.85±2.51 and 609.78±91.90 respectively, indicating moderate knowledge (51%) and good preparation (60%) for prehospital triage students. The mean and standard deviation of the triage period was 11.24±3.86 minutes and the Frequency and percentage of correct triage was (49.53) and incorrect triage was (511.41) 211 (including high triage (46.21) 46 and low triage (24.40) 165. In the field of pre-hospital triage function, participants had poor performance (nearly 52% of the students). Conclusion: Participants had moderate and good readiness for pre-hospital triage, but their performance was poor and unfavorable in dealing with unexpected events. Therefore, crisis management nursing courses with emphasis on new and practical training such as simulations is suggested.

Abstract:

Background and Objectives: Patient’s safety is one of the most important components of quality of care provision and nurses are the most effective groups of human resources for providing the services. Workload is one of the most important dimensions of nurses' efficiency. This study aimed to investigate the correlation of nurses’ workload and patient safety condition in emergency departments of Qom University of Medical Sciences Hospitals in 2017.Materials and Methods: This descriptive-analytical and cross-sectional study was conducted by participation of 150 nurses using Easy non-random sampling method and 300 patients using accessible sampling method. The NASA-TLX workload questionnaire and the safety observation questionnaire of emergency patients were used. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 20 software and statistical tests (independent T-test, ANOVA, Pearson and regression). The significance level in all tests was considered to be p<0.05.Results: Nurses' workload mean was 63.99±13.87 that was high and the mean of patient safety was 32.64±5.19 that was moderate. The correlation between nursing workload and patient safety was inverse and significant (p<0.05). Marital status and number of children of nurses had a significant correlation with patient safety status (p<0.05). The age of the patient had a significant and inverse relationship with patient safety status and patient safety level was higher in the afternoon shifts. Conclusion: by increasing the emergency nurses’ workload, the safety of patient in these parts is reduced. To improve the patient's safety status, measures should be taken to reduce the workload of nurses, such as the proper planning of the workforce of the emergency department by managers.
