Abstract:

Medical excellence centers have consistently sought to improve scientific status, expand the knowledge base, increase the number of expert researchers, create a dynamic environment, and promote a productive and effective international scientific network during the past several decades. In Iran since 1379, medical excellence centers joined the research structure as the highest scientific institutions. The senior management of the higher education system in the country is responsible for evaluation of these newly established scientific institutions. Assessment of these centers shows the quality their activities, which can contribute to quality improvement through dynamic feedback for the planning and activity development. In order to perform this assessment the Iranian Ministry of Health and Medical Education as an important part of higher education system designed a model of assessment and put it on its agenda in 2010. This article aims to describe the process of developing the tools for needed for this evaluation. The evaluation criteria has been developed based on "input", "process" and "educational, research, and services outcome" indexes. This evaluation has been considered as a comprehensive one because of including all aspects of management such as supply and training human resources, financing, providing equipment, process of empowerment and knowledge production as well as output in the field of education, research, industry and services. This scientific approach to the assessment of excellence centers makes them capable of being aware of their strengths and the assessment of excellence centers makes them capable of being aware of their strengths and weaknesses. As a result, they can improve their scientific capacity and activities.

Abstract:

Iran has a rich civilization and a long history, during which medical sciences flourished at specific periods. For instance, medicine blossomed in Sassanid's era (226–652 AD). One of the most remarkable cultural and scientific centers of Sassanid’s era was the city of Gondishapur located in Shah-Abad near Susa, Khuzestan province, south-west of Iran. The city was rebuilt in the third century AD, whereupon it soon became the most important scientific center of the ancient world. Gondishapur Medical School was a renowned cosmopolitan institution and had a crucial impact upon further development of medicine in Islamic era. At this school, the Greek, Persian, and Indian medical heritage was conserved, developed, and then transferred to the Islamic world and subsequently to the West. Gondishapur hospital was also an excellent model for establishment of hospitals particularly in the Islamic countries. Presented here is a brief account of the foundation of Gondishapur School of Medicine and its role in promoting medical science in antiquity.

Abstract:

The purpose of this research is to find the relationship between mental health and Job burnout among the Iranian Ministry of Health and Medical Education headquarters personnel. The population under study was all the working personnel in the Headquarter of above-men-tioned organization in 2007. The sample size, based on the scientific determination of sample size, was calculated to be 387 people with the layered sampling method. In collecting data two methods have been used:A) Gold burg mental health questionnaire, which includes 28 multiple-choice questions about four factors (anxiety- sleep disorder, major depression, social disorder and physical dis-order).B) Maslach job burnout questionnaire, which includes 22 multiple-choice questions about three factors (emotional fatigue, personality metamorphosis and lock of personal success). In order to analyze the discretional data, the mode, mean, medium and percentage were used.We also used the statistical methods (independent groups T-test, step by step multiple variance regression) to determine the outcomes. The results indicate that:1) It will be possible to predict the occupational fatigue in the Ministry of Health and Medical Education headquarters personnel from mental health scores:It is easier to predict mental health by looking at social disorders than sleep disorder or anxiety.According to this research among the four mentioned mental health factors the prediction value of Job burnout indicators can be prioritize as follow:1- Social disorder2- Anxiety- Sleep disorder3- Physical disorder4- Major depression2) There was no significant difference in the mental health status between male and female population.3) There was no significant difference in Job burnout between male and female population.

Abstract:

Background: The educational progress of the university students and its associated factors are one of the preferred fields of study for researcher and the educational managers of the medical Universities. This study was aimed to determine the associated factors with the educational progress of the students of Iran University of Medical Sciences in 2009-10.Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed in 2009-2010 at Iran University of Medical Sciences among 670 samples.  The necessary data was collected from SAMA site and the educational section of the university which included demographic and educational information (total grade point average, the number of failed courses, and failed semesters). The data was analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, non-parametric, linear and logistic regression utilizing SPSS software version 15.RESULTS: The highest mean belonged to Psychiatry Institute and the lowest to the School of Medicine. Also, the highest number of failed courses was in School of Medicine. In total 6.28% of the students had failed courses and 4.8% had failed semesters. The variables for failed courses, failed semesters total grade point average, gender, school, educational level, quota system and marital status were used as covariates for the RM with the outcome variables of total grade point average and the number failed courses and failed semesters. Also, the same variables were used for logistic regression analysis failed courses and failed semesters.CONCLUSION: The variables of gender, educational level, and school are the most important factors influencing the educational progress. Accepting more female and post-graduate students, using native quota system and providing good accommodation can facilitate the educational progress. Accepting more medical and post-graduate students without enough facilities can lead to educational retardation.

Abstract:

Background: limited resources and slow returns on investment in hospital industry as well as other factors such as high cost of hospital construction, the need for expensive and high tech equipment and shortage of skilled manpower have caused the efficient use of resources and effective administration of hospitals to be for a very critical issue for health policy makers. The aim of this descriptive and analytical study is to use Data Envelopment Analysis method for measuring of hospital efficiency.Material and Methods: This was a descriptive and analytical study. We used the data from 122 hospitals affiliated With Iranian Ministry of Health and Medical Education. Random sampling was used to select these 122 hospitals. We then used Data Envelopment Analysis method for measuring the hospital efficiency. Findings: Using the first model we determined the average technical efficiency in non deprived-training-general hospitals, non deprived training-general hospitals, non deprived-non training-general hospitals, deprived-non training- specialized hospitals, to be 0.710, 0.748, 0.458, 0.559 and 0.809 respectively. The highest average efficiency was found in non deprived-non training-specialized hospitals in this model. Technical efficiency, pure technical efficiency and scale efficiency measured by  the second model among 122 hospitals was 0.436, 0.591 and 0.746 respectively which demonstrates the weak hospital performance and a waste of 56% of resource by these hospitals. Conclusion: based on the results of the first model we can conclude the hospitals located in deprived areas are less efficient than other hospitals, which is confirmed in the second model as well. We can conclude that the main cause of inefficiency in the hospitals is due to mismanagement which has caused 71% of inefficiency in this set of hospitals.

Abstract:

Background: Tendency to experience extreme sensation can lead to risky behavior. The purpose of this study was to compare sensation seeking between HIV positive patients and normal individuals.Materials and Methods: In a causal comparative study, 50 HIV positive patients among HIV positive patients of Tabriz health center was selected and matched with 50 normal people. The data were collected using a demographic questionnaire and Zuckerman sensation seeking scale (SSS). Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS software and t-test was utilized to compare between groups. Results: The average sensation seeking (sensation seeking, experience seeking, adventure seeking and diversity seeking) as well as the total scale among AIDS patients was statistically higher than normal peoples (P<0.05). No statistically significant difference was found in boredom susceptibility and disinhibition between positive HIV patient and normal people. Conclusion: According to this preliminary study, because of higher sensation seeking in HIV positive patients, they are susceptible to risky behavior and HIV infection. More complementary studies are needed to identify different aspects of sensation seeking and methods of effective intervention.
